NATO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ORGANIZATION

The mission of the NATO Science & Technology Organization (STO) is to help position the Nations’ and NATO’s S&T investments as a strategic enabler of the knowledge and technology advantage for the defence and security posture of NATO Nations and partner Nations, by conducting and promoting S&T activities that augment and leverage the capabilities and programmes of the Alliance, of the NATO Nations and the partner Nations, in support of NATO’s objectives, and contributing to NATO’s ability to enable and influence security and defence related capability development and threat mitigation in NATO Nations and partner Nations, in accordance with NATO policies.

SENSORS AND ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY PANEL

The Sensors & Electronics Technology (SET) Panel is eager to advance technology in electronics and passive/active sensors (as they pertain to reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, electronic warfare, communications, navigation) and to enhance sensor capabilities through multi-sensor integration/fusion in order to improve the operating capability and to contribute to fulfil strategic military results.

NATO MODELLING AND SIMULATION GROUP

The mission of the NATO Modelling and Simulation (M&S) Group (NMSG) is to promote co-operation among Alliance bodies, NATO member nations and partner nations to maximise the effective utilisation of M&S.

SPECIALISTS' MEETING ON DRONE DETECTABILITY: MODELLING THE RELEVANT SIGNATURE

The first meeting of the Programme Committee for the Specialists’ Meeting on "Drone Detectability: Modelling the Relevant Signature" has been held in Palermo, Italy on 30 October 2019 with the task to start organizing such meeting.

The objectives of this NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG)/Sensors and Electronics Technology (SET) Cross-panel Specialists’ Meeting is to understand the requirements that have to be met by a sUAS detection system with respect to the platform characteristics that constitute the sUAS signature.

The specialist meeting will be conducted in the following four themed panels:
  • Current Detection Technologies – Experiences and Challenges with Modelling sUAS Signatures
  • Recent Developments and Future Threats – Anticipated Challenges for Modelling sUAS Signature
  • Modelling the Relevant Signatures for ’Traditional’ Detection Methods
  • New Approaches for Modelling the Relevant Signatures to enable Future Detection Methods
No fee is requested neither for submitting abstract nor for attending the meeting. Online registration is compulsory.

The Specialists' Meeting will facilitate the information exchange on sUAS signature characterisation and related modelling through presentations on most of the above topics from research and innovation points of view, including theoretical studies, and trials and experimentation, based on research combined with modelling activities.

The outcome of this Specialists' Meeting should improve current studies on the subject and suggest areas for further NATO research activities and will re-enforce the links with military bodies in NATO in order to improve the capability to meet the identified requirements.

The main exploitation envisioned is related to the capability that modelling will provide for testing, evaluating and experiment new Counter sUAS systems to support Nations and NATO that are embarking on a series of programmes for developing and deploying appropriate defensive measures, in terms of detection, classification, tracking and neutralisation of current and future sUAS threats in a cost effective manner.

Prominent leaders, contributors and representatives from the military, government, academia, and industry are expected to attend the meeting.
