Petr Pavel, M.A., GEN (Ret.)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am delighted to once again lend my patronage to the Future Forces Forum, an international platform that has for many years provided a unique space for networking and expert discussion on the future of defence, security and technological development.

Security is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for a free and prosperous life. Current events confirm that it cannot be taken for granted and that strengthening our national defence capabilities remains one of the key tasks of our time. The protection of states’ security interests is one of the defining issues of both European and global politics.

The rapidly changing international environment continues to present new challenges. Their urgency is evident in the ongoing war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz region and its repercussions for global trade, energy security and international stability. Rising geopolitical tensions, hybrid and cyber threats, and the competition for technological superiority all clearly demonstrate that national defence is no longer the sole responsibility of the armed forces. It is a shared responsibility of the state, industry, academia and society as a whole.

In this context, the ability of individual states to combine their own capabilities with the strength of allied cooperation is becoming increasingly important. Today’s security challenges demonstrate that national defence depends both on our own capabilities and on close cooperation among allies. The Czech Republic is a reliable partner, but it must also continue to strengthen its own defence capabilities. Investment in defence and in the development of the domestic defence industry, which makes a significant contribution to the country’s security and resilience, is an investment in the freedom, stability and future of our nation.

Modern technologies play a crucial role in this endeavour, fundamentally transforming the nature of both current and future conflicts. Drones, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems are influencing the conduct of military operations just as significantly as traditional military capabilities. The rapid adoption of innovation is becoming one of the decisive factors in defence readiness and strategic competitiveness.

Yet societal resilience is just as important as military strength. Modern security begins with informed citizens, trust in democratic institutions, the ability to counter disinformation and preparedness to respond to crisis situations. Today, national defence means not only protecting our borders, but also safeguarding the values upon which our freedom, democracy and the rule of law are founded.

Sharing experience and bringing expert communities together are essential prerequisites for meeting these challenges. It is therefore vital to create opportunities for dialogue, the exchange of knowledge and experience, and the pursuit of common solutions across sectors and generations.

I am confident that this year’s edition of the Future Forces Forum will once again offer inspiring discussions, foster the development of international cooperation and deliver concrete solutions that will contribute to the security of the Czech Republic, Europe and the entire Euro-Atlantic area.
